Algoa FM’s Hit Mobile will be supporting the blood drive with Pick ‘n Pay sponsoring donor refreshments, Ocean Basket giving away 10% discount vouchers and Young Nails doing free optional foot massages while donors are donating. While many people are getting ready for their summer holiday, SANBS is getting ready to collect sufficient blood to meet the increasing demand of hospitals. The usage of blood remains unpredictable and can even increase during the holidays due to increased road accidents. In South Africa a blood transfusion takes place every 39 seconds. Currently, blood usage is increasing by at least 2% year on year. “There is no factory that makes blood and therefore we rely on the altruism of people to support this life-saving service, ” says Public Relations Practitioner Maryke Harris. Donating blood takes only 20 minutes and is completely safe. One unit of blood can be given to three different patients as it is separated into three components, namely Plasma, Platelets and Red Cells. You can become a blood donor if you are between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh more than 50kg and lead a safe and healthy lifestyle. Please remember to have a good meal at least 4 hours before giving blood. The SANBS staff are highly qualified, registered and audited according to the tasks they perform so you will be in safe hands. Fountains Mall has adopted this community project and would like to motivate the entire community to participate in this nationally renowned initiative and assist our children in keeping Jbay clean. Why? Because, this project: . Create awareness and make a difference . Reach across boundaries with compassion and goodwill . Empower kids to become self-sufficient . Get the community involved . Empower kids to generate better choices . Take care of the environment . Encourage kids to become entrepreneurs . Set up a system for kids to count, shop, save and set goals for themselves . Turn trash into treasure using a "value for value" approach How: . Kids collect recyclable junk like plastic bottles, tins and glass . On a Monday afternoon, they bring it to Pellsrus Primary School from 2 o' clock . Volunteers sign in the kids, weigh the recyclable materials, get points for tokens and then can trade their tokens in the Recycling Swop Shop . The Swop Shop is stocked by donations from businesses, friends of the project and the community . Recyclable material is collected by Enviroman, the local recycling company They need you to volunteer on Mondays to help kids weigh their recyclables and swop their tokens at the shop and donation of goods for the Swop Shop.
